A lightweight column capital is a low-weight crown element made from polyurethane that fits on the upper end of a column shaft and forms the transition between the shaft and the ceiling. It is used as the column's crowning ornament in classic orders such as Doric, Ionic and Corinthian. Polyurethane is much lighter than stone or plaster, so it can be applied at height by one person and fixed to the shaft with construction adhesive. It resists moisture and impact, will not crack or swell, and can be painted. Because it is moulded, the leaf and volute details on the capital repeat identically on every piece.
