A carved column capital is a decorative polyurethane capital element fitted over the top of a column or half-column, carrying a motif raised in relief by carving. In classical architecture it is used to decorate the transition between the column shaft and the ceiling or arch. The polyurethane material is lightweight; it is applied directly with construction adhesive, resists moisture and impact, does not crack or swell, and can be painted. It is far lighter and easier to install than a stone or plaster capital, and unlike wood it is unaffected by moisture. Because it is mould-cast, the carved details repeat exactly the same on every piece. Polure produces carved column capitals in a range of column diameters and motifs.
