above-window surround

An above-window surround is a polyurethane decorative element, usually in a horizontal profile or header form, that frames the top edge of a window. It is used on facades and in interiors to complete the area around a window and give the top a finish. Polyurethane is lightweight and is applied directly to the wall with adhesive and screws; it resists moisture and impact, does not crack or swell, and can be painted. Compared with plaster, the risk of breakage is low; compared with wood, it stands up to damp. Because it is moulded, the profile repeats identically on every piece.
