volute capital

A volute capital is a polyurethane column capital worked with the spiral scroll form known as a volute. The double-sided scrolled volutes characteristic of the Ionic and Composite orders sit on the side corners of the capital as a decorative element. It is used at the top end of the column shaft to form a transition between the shaft and the ceiling or cornice. The polyurethane material is lightweight and applied directly to the column with mounting adhesive; it resists moisture and impact, does not crack, swell or warp, and can be painted. Being lighter than its stone and plaster equivalents, it makes installation easier and adds no load to the column. Because it is mould-produced, the volute scrolls and details repeat identically on every piece. Polure produces the volute capital in a range of diameters and sizes.
