voluted column capital

A voluted column capital is a polyurethane column capital shaped with a spiral scroll (volute) form. The double-sided volutes characteristic of the Ionic and Composite orders sit at the corners of the capital and crown the top end of the column shaft. It is selected at a diameter compatible with the column and mounted to form a transition between the shaft and the ceiling or cornice. The polyurethane material is lightweight and applied directly with mounting adhesive; it resists moisture and impact, does not crack, swell or warp, and can be painted. Being lighter than its stone and plaster equivalents, it makes installation easier and adds no load to the column. Because it is mould-produced, the volute scrolls repeat identically on every piece.
