A decorative handrail is a polyurethane element that forms the grip and top finishing profile at the upper part of a stair and balcony railing. Placed over newel posts and railing pieces, it caps the railing from above and gives a classic look. Polyurethane is lightweight and applied with construction adhesive and concealed fixings; it resists moisture and impact, does not crack, swell, or warp, and can be painted. Because it is unaffected by moisture, unlike a wood handrail, it needs less maintenance outdoors. Cast in a mould, its profile repeats identically on every piece and joints are easy to align.
