A voluted polyurethane capital is a column capital made of polyurethane worked with the spiral scroll form known as a volute. The volutes characteristic of the Ionic and Composite orders sit at the corners of the capital as a decorative element and are applied to the top end of the column shaft. It is used to form a transition between the shaft and the cornice or ceiling. The polyurethane material is lightweight and applied directly to the column with mounting adhesive; it resists moisture and impact, does not crack, swell or warp, and can be painted. Being lighter than its stone and plaster equivalents, it makes installation easier and adds no load to the column.
