Patina polyurethane painting is a surface painting technique that gives an aged (patina) effect to polyurethane decoration products. After the base colour is applied, a dark or gold-toned patina is applied into the recesses and reliefs and the excess is wiped off, bringing out the pattern details; this achieves a wood, stone or antique metal appearance. It is preferred on relief polyurethane products such as cornices, surrounds, bosses, column capitals and ceiling roses. Because the polyurethane surface is non-porous and paintable, it keeps the patina even; being moisture- and impact-resistant, the finished surface is preserved for a long time. The patina is applied in two or three layers with water- or solvent-based paints. Polure products are made with a smooth surface suitable for patina painting, so the aged detail appears clearly on the reliefs.
