Exterior columns and pilasters refer together to full-bodied columns used on a building facade and pilasters, which are flat-shafted columns half-embedded in the wall. A column stands independently from the facade as a structural or decorative element, while a pilaster is attached to the wall and gives the surface rhythm and depth.
