A polyurethane column capital is the profiled polyurethane piece at the very top of the column shaft that connects the shaft to the structure above. It forms the upper termination of the column and creates a transition that widens from the shaft towards the ceiling or beam; in classical orders it may carry leaf or volute motifs. In decorative column applications it is mounted on top of the shaft. The polyurethane material is lightweight and is applied with adhesive and dowels; it resists moisture, frost and impact, does not crack or swell and can be painted. It is far lighter than a stone capital; it makes installation at height easier and applies faster. Because it is cast in a mould, the motif and profile detail repeat identically on every piece.
