A decorative column ornament is the relief detail applied to the column surface and to the capital and base areas. It enriches the column's plain appearance, shaping the surface with classical motifs such as fluting, acanthus leaves and volutes. Indoors it is used in living rooms and transition areas, and outdoors on entrance and arcade columns to give a classical character.
