Polyurethane Architectural Pilaster Columns

Architectural Definition and Structural Sophistication

In modern high-end architecture, achieving depth and classical proportions without compromising structural load limits is a major engineering challenge. The pilaster column offers a sophisticated solution by replicating the classic projection of flat columns directly on flat walls. Originating from ancient Greco-Roman designs, these decorative half-column elements are engineered using rigid, high-density polyurethane (PU) with a closed-cell structure. By projecting slightly from the wall surface, they establish a rhythmic vertical layout, giving interior halls, facades, and entryways an elegant structural appearance without the physical footprint of full columns.

Technical Performance and Material Density

Unlike fragile plaster or heavy cast stone, our pilaster column products are manufactured with a precise density of 150-220 kg/m³. This specific density range gives the material a wood-like hardness and excellent impact resistance while remaining lightweight and easy to handle during installation. The material properties include:

• Dimensional Stability Test: Dimensional stability has been tested between -20 °C and +70 °C with reduced risk of bending, warping, or dimensional distortion.
• Moisture Resistance: Assess water and moisture exposure using the product technical data, surface finish and installation details.
• Fire Behavior: The material has fire class B2 (DIN 4102-1).
• Surface Finish: Delivered with a factory-applied primer that prepares the surface for final coatings.

Design Variations: Fluted, Patterned, and Panel Configurations

To meet diverse architectural specifications across the European market, our product catalog contains several design profiles. The fluted pilaster column models, such as the P5014 and P5015 series, utilize vertical grooves to capture light and shadow, creating an optical illusion of increased ceiling height. For projects requiring ornate details, patterned models like the P1455 feature highly detailed botanical reliefs and classical motifs. Modern minimalist designs often incorporate the P5015WP panel pilasters, which integrate smoothly with contemporary wall paneling and trim work.

Modular Integration: Capitals and Bases

To achieve a complete architectural column layout, the central shaft must be paired with matching capitals and bases. Our modular system allows architects to combine the main shafts (available in standard dimensions like 20x140x2000 mm or 31x150x2400 mm) with specialized toppers. Options include the classical Ionic capital (P5015IP) and Corinthian-inspired capitals (P5014A, P5014E, P5016A). For the ground connection, the P5015BP base provides a solid visual anchor. This modular approach simplifies field adjustments and allows for customized heights on site.

Surface Coating and Primer Guidelines

Each pilaster column arrives with a factory-applied primer designed to prepare the surface for painting. However, please note that paint manufacturers generally do not guarantee adhesion or finish longevity unless their own brand-specific primers are applied first. Therefore, applying an additional primer layer prior to final painting is optional and remains the sole responsibility of the customer. Polure does not offer warranties on paints applied to our products. For outdoor installations, applying a high-quality, UV-resistant paint is mandatory to protect the raw polyurethane from yellowing and weather-related degradation over time.
